McGhee to stay at Motherwell

In a move which will stun much of the Scottish football establishment we have reversed the sad habit of allowing any so called larger club to cherry pick whatever talent it chooses from Fir Park.

At work

It looked like an inevitable momentum was building for a move to Hearts. They made an official move and it seemed that the lure of a bigger club would draw our man to Tynecastle. Their request to speak to McGhee was rebuffed and many reported that this was merely a bargaining tool to ensure a decent level of compensation.

The details of the new deal are still to emerge (and it's possible that they never will) but the efforts of John Boyle to keep McGhee will be applauded be everyone who holds the claret and amber dear. Our chairman is to be married in a couple of weeks and he has just secured a gem of a wedding present!

In fairness to McGhee he always stated that any approach to lure him away from his present job would have to be balanced against the satisfaction that he has found at Motherwell. "The prospect of leading Motherwell into Europe is a massive incentive for me to stay at Fir Park. Having the most brilliant bunch of players, a fantastic chairman and supporters who have backed me fully this season will cause me to think long and hard about any decision I make. "

The fact that he has chosen to stay will give an enormous boost to the playing staff and it will almost certainly make it easier for the club to attract others of the calibre of Hughes and Porter.

The timing of this decision should give a boost to season ticket sales - let's hope that the club can get them on sale soon.
