Motherwell Colts and Ladies march on

There was no Premiership action for Motherwell this weekend but those in need of a claret and amber fix were spoilt for choice as the Colts and Ladies filled the gap with terrific victories.

Saturday afternoons’ entertainment came courtesy of the Irn Bru Cup.  Sligo Rovers provided the opposition for Motherwell Colts and with a lunchtime pitch inspection declaring that the pitch had survived the heavy rain the game got underway with close to a thousand fans watching from the Hunter Stand.  A respectable 152 made the crossing in support of the League of Ireland team.

Stephen Craigan’s charges took an early lead when Jake Hastie had his shot defelected by Patrick McLean and the game was settled in the second half when Christan Mbulu scored a fine goal with twenty minutes remaining.

The visitors pressed hard in several spells and Craigan was delighted with the resistance offered by his team.  Many are pressing for inclusion in the first team squad and this journey into the quarter finals will help to advance their claim.

The draw takes place at The Hub in Edinburgh next Tuesday, October 16, at 1.00pm, with ties to be played on the weekend of November 17/18.

The weekend action continued with the semi-final of the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup on Sunday.  The game was played at Forthbank against first division Spartans.

The Motherwell side, already run away winners of SWPL2, continued their impressive run with a 3-1 win and now have a cup final date with Hibs at Firhill on Sunday 4 November.

Goals from Megan Burns, Kerry Montgomery and Caitlan Russell paved the way for a night of celebration with Spartan’s Tegan Reynolds the only reply.

Congratulation to both teams – let’s hope the ‘big team’ can be inspired from those results and deliver us a win on Saturday.
