It was no secret that relationships inside the club were strained, at best. Saturday's performance caused many fans to recall the Malpas era and that comparison demonstrated the loss of enchantment with the new manager.

The club were unhappy that Gannon had not signed his contract despite repeated requests. At the recent MST Fans' Forum he was asked about his committment to the club and whether he had signed on the dotted line. He replied in terms of the loyalty he had shown to Stockport but gave no assurance as to his contract.

The parting of the ways seems like a realisation between both parties that things were not working out. The team were going backwards and the early promise that the manager had brought was fading fast.

Gordon Young will take over in the short term but the club has a real problem now that we are only days from the transfer window. Clearly there will be a need for a replacement very soon.
