Next up - Clyde

Motherwell take on Clyde on Saturday needing a win to finish top of Betfred Cup Group G.  Some self belief has been restored following Tuesday’s 2-0 against Queen of the South but a repeat of the performance in Stranraer must be avoided.

The 'Welll support at Broadwood in 2011

Our last visit to Broadwood was in the 2011 league Cup campaign when goals from Higdon, Law, Hateley and Lawless delivered a comfortable win on the artificial surface.

On this occasion three points will place us in Sunday’s knockout draw but there is another route.  A high scoring draw (4-4 or better) and a shootout point would also see us through, let’s not go there.

Dunne will remain on the sidelines but the hope is that Main will be available having sat out Tuesday’s match.  Sammon will hope that his two midweek goals will persuade the manager to include him in the starting eleven alongside Bowman or Johnson.

Stephen Robinson must still be some way from determining his strongest eleven and the varied levels of fitness among the squad further add to his calculations.  Whatever group he chooses on Saturday will have to work hard to overcome the Clyde side that were able to take care of Stranraer on Tuesday.

They were three up at the break at Stair Park with Goodwillie scoring twice.  Stranraer got a second half consolation.  Irrespective of Saturday’s result our opponent’s interest in the league Cup will end after this game.

Those who make the short journey across Lanarkshire from Motherwell will expect a comfortable afternoon.  A 3-0 win will keep us happy.
