Rangers 24 Hours On - Time to Capitalise

Everyone can see that we are playing well and the transformation under Mark McGhee has been absolutely astonishing. The minimum requirement for any Motherwell side is that they give everything in every game and not only are we doing that, we are playing with a panache that has not been seen at Fir Park since the heady days of the mid-90s.

We have too many empty seats too often
However now that we are actually playing good football and putting an entertaining product on the park this is the time to start trying to get people through the door. In the past we have tried special deals to bring folk in before now but they have largely been unsuccessful. It would seem a safe assumption that while people will occasionally pay a fiver to watch us battle against Inverness in a dire draw, that product is not going to bring them back in the future. It is probably important to realise the results aren't the big thing. If a casual spectator is bored to death by a terrible 0-0 draw, will they be enthralled by an equally terrible game which ends in us winning 1-0? Of course not.

Therefore to that extent we don't need to promote ourselves to casual fans as being winners, we need to make it clear that if you come to Fir Park you will be entertained and get value for money. The hardcore who turn up every week are about the results but the floating folk want to feel they get value for their £20. We have around two weeks before we play Hibs - a week for some wag to come up with a marketing campaign and a week to promote the game shouldn't be beyond us. But there is no reason why we can't promote Hibs as well. These clubs have received plenty of positive press this season, and Hibs are unbeaten in the league, so it can't be that difficult to make this a very appealing afternoon out for the neutral or casual fan.

Alternatively when we know we have attractive games like Hibs and Rangers cup tie coming up (and yes, we have to agree the cup prices with Rangers) why not produce two or three game ticket blocks? Buy Hibs or Rangers tickets in advance and combine it with the St Mirren or Gretna games for £25 or something like that.

There can be problems with specifics but there is no doubt we have a great chance to get people into Fir Park. Once there they might stay beyond this season or at worst they can support the time when things continue to go well. Either way the new regime that is in charge has been given the ideal opportunity to make an impressive start off the pitch because of what Mark McGhee and the guys are doing on the field.
