Review of Season 2002/3 (2)

Yes, it really happened!
By the time Larsson had spurned three glorious chances in the first half, the home stands at Fir Park were full of believers. James McFadden had caught the eye of many people and his performance on this wet night was excellent. Some delightful trickery allowed Hammell to cross for Shaun Fagan to score with a diving header.

Moments later McFadden jinked down the wing before being hauled down in the box by Laursen. He stroked the penalty home and we had done enough to ensure a glorious 2-1 victory.

We were at Tynecastle next and some people believe that this is where our season went wrong. 2-0 up, we conceded a sloppy goal before half time and in the second half we were totally overrun by an excellent Hearts performance. 4-2 was the eventual score but had they hit seven or eight we would have had few complaints. We had dull loss at East End Park before the League Cup gave us some respite. New Bayview was another venue for ‘Well fans to visit and around 400 saw us cruise to a 2-0 success. Faddy ensured we got a 1-1 draw at home to Dundee before we threw away at least a point, and possibly three, against Aberdeen. 1-0 up at half time, we lost 2-1 with Eric Deloumeaux sticking the knife into us for the first time.

A 3-0 tonking at Ibrox was not unexpected and it featured the sending off of David Partridge. It was our first of the season. What came next was frankly ridiculous. Livingston arrived at Fir Park at the bottom of the league and left with five goals and a higher place in the league. Believe it or not, we gave as good as we got for most of the game but Livi’s finishing was blessed by the gods. Two outrageous chips, a rocket from thirty yards, an error from Hammell and an astonishing finish from the corner flag gave Livi five goals from the six attacks they had all game. We still managed to score the best goal of the game with Kemas’ volley but it was not enough.

Thistle and United were still below us at this point but the consensus was that we were lucky not to be bottom. That could all change the next weekend though when we visited Firhill while United went to Kilmarnock.

We turned in an abysmal performance – yet another let down in a game against a fellow relegation candidate – and lost to a goal in each half. Needless to say, Burns scored again. We looked like avoiding the bottom spot but when the fans got back to the bus, they were met by the news that United had scored a last minute winner. After only one point out of the last twenty one, we had finally sunk to rock bottom like we deserved. Would we be able to recover?
