St Mirren - 24h On

In the raging debates following the second half collapse, we should not lose sight of the fact that we have guaranteed another year's SPL football with a game to spare. Dispel any romantic notion that a visit to Division 1 would provide a romantic interlude or that trips to Greenock, Maryhill or Livingston would soften the blow. Relegation would have provoked a financial disaster (regardless of any possible takeover) and there would be no guarantee of a speedy return.

At the start of the season many Motherwell fans argued that survival in the top flight would be an acceptable outcome, given the inheritance which fell to a new manager. That has been achieved despite the loss of many of the first choice players. The breakdown in the relationship between management and fans has overshadowed that achievement.

Malpas' post match moan could be interpreted as an invitation to the board to pay him a year's salary and send him on his way.

His comments are, by far, the most extreme that any Motherwell manager has made about the fans. Indeed, it is difficult to find another instance from any club of a representative laying into its supporters with such gusto.

Of the players, he volunteered that "too many people didn't have the heart" and he said the team's performance was, "a bit gutless". There was a need to "get other players in and get a better and hungrier squad".

Of the fans he produced comments such as, "I am disappointed with the fans reaction. I was looking for them to get behind the team", "the takeover gave the fans something to gripe about as well", "you expect the fans to cheer the team, really disappointed with the reaction" and in what sounded like a farewell challenge, "they won't get me out and if anybody else wants to get me out then that's fine."

It seems that the players are to blame, the fans are to blame and the press stories of the takeover are to blame. Instead of taking responsibility for the dreadful end of season form (one win in twelve) Malpas seems to find fault everywhere but at the manager's door!
