Win over United absolutely massive

“Absolutely massive” was how McGhee described the night’s work.  His radical reshuffle and adoption of an unusual formation not only smothered United’s attacking options but it kept ours open.  He talked of the eureka moment when he sent the suggested shape to Steve Robinson in a 4a.m. text and his satisfaction at the energy and commitment of the team.

Desperate Dan couldn't stop the Mighty 'Well

Faddy was given a rare place in the starting eleven and his delivery of the free kick on the stroke of half time set up the opening goal.  Laing and Hall were well supported by McManus in the three man back line and Cadden and Johnstone worked hard on the flanks.  Once again McDonald played to his strength when he squeezed into the gap between Dillon and the ball to draw the foul that led to the opening goal.  His two goals in the second half were a fine reward for his efforts.

The result leaves Paatelainen’s men 15 points behind our 29 point total and the prospect of Championship football almost certain.

There will be little time for the players to relax before plans have to be laid for Saturday’s trip to Perth.  But the first league win of the year will restore some belief.  What inspiration will the manager get from his dreams this time?
