Motherwell CT FC 4-3 Victoria Park (League Cup Group 8) 01/09/12

Man Of the Match - Jamie Weir

Goals Weir(3), Kane(1)

Team - Felvus, Wilson, Tait, Anderson, Steven, Sinclair, MacKenzie, McNeil, Kane, Tonner, Weir

Subs - Fox, Law

Motherwell had to contend with a number of changes due to injuries and only 3 minutes into the game their uphill battle became an even bigger task when defender John Anderson had to leave the field of play due a nasty gash on the lip following an accidental elbow to the face in a coming together of players.

The Well had to re-group and regain focus while having to deal with shuffling the squad around. Fox replaced Anderson with Sinclair filling in at the back, which allowed Fox to take up his more familiar role wide right.

Just as Motherwell were finding their feet, they found themselves a goal down 10 minutes into the game. Well then became the better team, creating more of the chances and pressing Victoria at every opportunity. Well then broke forward with MacKenzie playing McNeil into the box only to be brought to the ground in a lazy challenge. Kane stepped up and kept his composure sending the keeper the wrong way to get Motherwell back on level terms.

Motherwell gained confidence from the goal and really started to pile on the pressure and a quick fire double from Weir, saw Motherwell take a well deserved lead into the second half.

Weir has really got to be commended for the constant pressure he puts opposition defenders under which lead to his two goals.

Victoria Park really came out in the second half with the bit between their teeth, determined not to be victims of a Cup upset. And their pressure paid off with a goal shortly after the re-start. Well held their nerve on the ball not panicking under pressure. However 7 minutes from the end Victoria Park won a corner which saw Felvus make his only mistake of the season and drop the cross ball which saw the opposition striker capitalise to level the game and make for an entertaining closing few minutes.

Motherwell found themselves under severe pressure in the dying minutes and as Victoria Park were concentrating on finding the winner, they took their eye off the ball at the back which saw Motherwell catch them on the break and as the ball broke to who else but Weir, he kept his composure to slip it past the keeper to win the game in the dying seconds.

The Steel Men's hard work and discipline paid off today with a fantastic victory, continuing their fine start to the season.
