A last gasp wonder strike from Jardell Kanga snatched a point for Motherwell after a six goal thriller in Paisley.
The dream start came inside two minutes. St Mirren lost possession in the ‘Well half and Alex Lowry spotted Tawanda Maswanhise on the left. A fine pass and some pace saw the striker beat his man before a side step away from the ‘keeper and a roll into the empty net.
The start could have been even better had Maswanhise not has his penalty kick saved on fifteen minutes. Alex Gogic’s hand ball was spotted by the VAR but Jacob Chapman kept the score at 1-0.Motherwell continued to have the best of the attacking moves as Maswanhise fired wide. The lead was doubled following a corner from the left. A partial clearance gave Tom Sparrow a shot but the block fell to Regan Charles-Cook. From 20 yards he curled a shot into the net. It looked like a canter for the Steelmen.
St Mirren reduced the deficit five minutes before the break. Paul Nsio scored from the 18 yard line but they were to add another couple in the short time remaining to shock the visitors.
Declan John took possession in his own half and charged upfield. A one-two saw him burst into the clear and he finished by beating Alex Paulsen at his near post. In added time St Mirren had a free kick forty yards out and the high floated delivery was only half cleared. After a couple of headers the ball fell to Samuel Ramos to give the hosts an unlikely lead at the break.
Stephen O’Donnell replaced Sparrow as the teams emerged from the break and Motherwell set about scoring in front of their fans in the away stand. A first chance came just before the hour but Maswanhise was inches short of connecting with the tempting ball across the six yard box. It was his last involvement as he and Charles-Cook were replaced by Jardell Kanga and Seb Palmer-Houlden.
Dylan Williams and Eythor Bjorgolfsson were pitched in as Alfred Johansson completed his changes. But Motherwell had lost the fluency that gave them dominance for most of the first half.
Chances came at both ends as the game neared the end. The best fell to Jake Young but Paulsen made the save.
Deep in added time Motherwell earned a corner and a point was salvaged. The ball broke to Kanga and the new boy cracked a beauty into the net from wide on the right. What a way to endear yourself to the support.
A draw was fair in the end but Motherwell should have been uncatchable after half an hour.
