Motherwell make short work of Dundee United at Fir Park

Motherwell keep the pressure on the top three with a 2-0 home win over Dundee United.

Right from the kick-off there was little doubt that Motherwell were going to take the three points.  The complete domination they showed in the opening quarter suggested that it was only a matter of time before the goals would come.

The goal did arrive with the help of an undisciplined elbow from Vicko Sevelj.  He caught Tawanda Maswanhise in the chest and after a VAR review a penalty was awarded.  The top scorer found the net to give a one goal lead at the break.

Before that there was some sparkling entertainment from the Steelmen.  Often starting with Callum Ward, the ball was moved with accurate passing up to the opposition’s penalty area.  At times the big home support burst out with a round of applause in appreciation of the skill on show.  There were several chances created as the ball whizzed across the face of goal.

The biggest home support of the season?

Any concerns that the ‘Well had only a a one goal margin were dispelled in the first minute after halftime.  Motherwell had attempted several long balls behind the United defence in a bit of a change from their normal game and from a free kick in his own half Eli Just sent it upfield to Maswanhise.  He won the tussle with Sevelj and tried a hopeful shot from the right side of the box.  With the help of a nick off the defender the ‘keeper was beaten and the game was won.

Goodwin threw on for substitutes in an attempt to turn the game and United came into the contest in a more meaningful way.  Motherwell’s run of clean sheets came under threat from a corner at the Hunter stand side.  It rebounded off the for post and another game was added to the huge clean sheet tally.

Maswanhise had another couple of chances to secure his hat-trick but Ashley Maynard-Brewer made the saves.  Eythor Bjorgolfsson was on for the last for twenty minutes and he caused problems for the visiting defence.  He’ll be an asset in the remaing games of the season.

As is the habit there were no passengers in claret and amber as the team were cheered from the park at the end.

The other half of Dundee will provide the opposition next week.
