Motherwell undone in added time

Motherwell took only a point in Perth as St Johnstone scored with the last touch of the ball to draw 2-2.

It was a crushing end to a game that, for the most part, was controlled by the visitors.  Motherwell had regained some of the form that had led to the six game losing streak and the team bus would not be happy on the homeward run.

Alfred Johansson stuck by the eleven that lost to Hearts on Sunday but they took charge from the kick-off.  They had a corner after ten seconds and for the first fifteen minutes the Saiints hardly had a touch inside Motherwell’s half.

A succession of early chances were spurned before the home side shocked the travelling fans by scoring after twenty minutes.  Taylor Steven took advantage of space in front of Alex Paulsen as he drove into the net.

Motherwell needed a spark to unlock the home defence and Ibrahim Said provided it with the goal of the game.  He produced one of his trademark mazy runs and blasted the ball into the net from ten yards.  All square at the break.

Johansson showed his attacking intent as Lukas Fadinger and Jardell Kanga joined as the game resumed.  Motherwell continued to be the attacking team and they took the lead when Tawanda Maswanhise pick up a loose ball to find himself with plenty a room at the edge of the area. A composed finish in front of the away end was celebrated as last season’s top scorer gave thanks.

Simo Valakari turned to his bench to salvage the game.  His side were more adventurous and for the first time the Steelmen were pinned back in defence.  Johansson added Jamie Knight-Lebel and Stephen O’Donnell in an attempt to hold the lead.

In the last minute of added time Josh Campbell rose above the ‘Well defence to head home a cross and steal a point.

“Extremely sore and painful” was the manager’s view after the game.  And so say all of us!
