Motherwell and Aberdeen meet at Fir Park on Tuesday for a league fixture
that was originally scheduled for August.
The Steelmen’s European commitments prompted the earlier postponement of
this meeting and the teams can now engage under the Fir Park floodlights.
The Motherwell squad had the luxury of a competition free weekend after
a busy start to the season (12 games in 44 days). Their exit from the League Cup was not
planned but it has offered a chance for recovery for some and a full week of
training for others.
Aberdeen have had a more leisurely introduction to their season (11
games in 59 days) but success has been limited.
After an opening day three points against Hearts the Dons have struggled in
the league. Four goalless games have
delivered a measly single point and unhappy fans.
On Saturday they reached the League Cup semis having scraped past a
hopeless Kilmarnock side after extra-time and penalties. At least they managed to score a goal in
regulation time.
Kevin Nisbet and Toyosi Olusanya (a half-time substitute) offered the
main goal scoring threat while their defence held firm against the ineffective
Kilmarnock eleven men.
Alfred Johansson watch his side end the unbeaten league run at Ibrox
in the last outing but he was able to take heart that his methods continue to
produce plenty of entertaining football.
Squad confidence remains high and the ‘Well support continues to grow as
word of the quality football product spreads.
With the transfer window now closed and the injury list now reduced the
manager has the opportunity to field a strong starting eleven backed by a
strong bench. New faces (Jardell Kanga,
Dylan Levitt, Seb Palmer-Houlden and Alex Lowry) are already contributing and
they will benefit from the last week of team building.
There’s every reason to hope for a cheery night under the lights and
possibly a 3-1 home win
