Motherwell face Morton at Fir Park on Tuesday knowing that a win will guarantee the top spot in Group G.
Motherwell and Morton are regular opponents in cup competitions. There have been half a dozen clashes in the last decade. The Steelmen normally come out on top but there have been a few upsets, most recently in season 2023/24 when Dougie Imrie’s side knocked Motherwell out of the Scottish Cup.
Morton have already beaten Peterhead and Stenhousemuir and scored seven goals to make an impressive start in the competition. The goals were spread among six players with Tomi Adeloye claiming a brace against Stenhousemuir at the weekend.
The visitors have brought in Billy Davies as “technical head coach” to support Imrie. The 61 year old played more than a hundred times in claret and amber and was manager between 1998 and 2001.

Jens Berthel Askou expressed mixed emotions about his team’s performance at Ochilview. First half satisfaction was replaced with disappointment at the showing in the second period. He felt the players dropped the pace and that they should have created more scoring opportunities given the amount of possession.
He continued the squad rotation and for the third consecutive game used all five substitutes. With the importance of this probable group decider he may reveal what he considers to be his strongest eleven.
Motherwell have made heavy work against the lower division challenge and they can expect nothing less from the Championship side. No doubt there will be scary moments but it may end with a nervy 2-1 win.
