No goals at Fir Park

Neither Motherwell nor Hearts could find the net in front of a huge crowd at Fir Park.

Motherwell remain unbeaten in six while Hearts are now winless in four after a tense afternoon that saw 11,000 pack into the old stadium

Jens Berthel Askou made four changes to the eleven that saw off the other half of Edinburgh in midweek as Emmanuel Longelo, Lukas Fadinger, Callum Slattery and Callum Hendry came in to restore the usual four at the back formation.

The first half was business as usual for the home side.  They had the vast majority of the ball as they passed and probed.  Hearts conceded territory and soaked up the threats with only occasional breaks into the Cooped end of the park.

The first chance came when Eli Just robbed Stuart Findlay in his own area.  That gave Tawanda Maswanhise a sight of goal but his mistimed effort flew wide. It reinforced the Steelmen’s confidence and the maintained possession for long spells. It took 17 minutes for the visitors to advance to the ‘Well area but the defence was untroubled.

Hendry seemed to have scored when he got a touch off of a cross from Elliot Watt but VAR drew the lines and ended the celebration.  Just had several decent chances throughout the afternoon and the first arrived following a break from defence.  He ran in from the right but his weak effort was held by Alexander Schwolow.  Hearts would retreat to the dressing room at half-time grateful to be level.

Derek McInnes must have had a few stern words as his charges came to life in the second period although they were fortunate that Just could not find the net when he headed into the keeper’s arms.   They have a urgency and energy that had been absent in the first 45 minutes.  Hendry produced a goal line clearance to deny a Lawrence Shankland header from a corner.  It proved to be their best effort af the afternoon.

The game became and end-to-end affair as the tempo increased.  Motherwell battled forward and chances came.  Schwolow was called to armes and responded with three good stops.  Just burst through the centre of the area but could not beat the guardian.  A Slattery free kick and a 20 yard effort from Fadinger produced fine saves but there was no breakthrough.

Both sides poured on the substitutes but there was to be no late winner.  Motherwell probably had the best of the afternoon but just lacked the killer touch in forward areas.  Hearts would return home content with the point.

The busy spell continues as Motherwell travel to Falkirk on Wednesday.
