Motherwell were trounced 4-0 by an Aberdeen side that gave a lesson in finishing.
The home crowd turned up expecting to see their favourites control the match and maybe score a goal or two. Stephen Robinson’s team stood up to the initial challenge before a well place low drive from Gavin Malloy gave them the lead at the break.
Motherwell enjoyed long spells of possession but they had only a couple of weak shots from Alex Lowry and an attempt from Emmanuel Longelo; a poor return for their seeming control of the game.
The visitors had scored with their first shot on target although Kevin Nisbet had come close with a 20 yard rocket inches wide. Any cunning plan that Alfred Johansson had hatched in his half-time team talk was thrown out thirty seconds into the second period.
Careless loss of possession as Motherwell played out from the back gave Connor Ronan an opening and with the help of a deflection the lead was two.
Plenty to contemplate
Johansson soon turned to his bench but the famed passing game was ineffective. A combination of slackness and stout defending blunted the Steelmen’s progress. Crosses were easily controlled by the big Dons’ defence and they were often out-muscled in midfied.
Motherwell continued to have most of the ball and the need to push forward gave the visitors opportunities. Ayoub Mouloua and Nisbet finished the contest to send the travelling fans home happy.
The statistics claim that Aberdeen had 31% off the ball and four shots on target. Motherwell have to find a way of testing the opposition goalkeeper and when better to start than at Dens Park on Saturday.
