Motherwell hold Hibs at bay

Last Updated : 11-Jan-2026 by John Wilson

Motherwell and Hibs stood toe to toe at Easter Road and had to settle for a point each after a 1-1 draw.

This was an end to end affair that produced chances for each side. After a goalless first half Tawanda Maswanhise had the travelling fans on their feet but the lead lasted under fifteen minutes before Kieron Bowie leveled the game.

Callum Slattery and Elliot Watt missed out as Tom Sparrow and Oscar Priestman were promoted to the starting eleven.  The manager had to call to his bench early as Stephen O’Donnell had to be replaced.  Johnny Koutroumbis joined the game.

The home side had the best of the first period and they tested the ‘Well defence with lots of crossed balls and corner kicks.  Elie Youan got on the end of one but Callum Ward held.

At the other end Maswanhise came into the game with a fine burst that left a`couple of defenders in his wake but his shot was saved.   Kenayo Megwa chanced his luck with a powerful shot from a tight angle but Ward was in place to save.

Motherwell were out well before Hibs at the end of the interval and even had time for a kickabout while waiting.  They looked more comfortable in the second half.

Motherwell scored following the breakdown of a Hibs attack.  Emmanuel Longelo, Ibrahim Said and Eli Just combined to feed Maswanhise on the right of the penalty area.  A low driven shot to the far post found the net and the Zimbabwean was able to celebrate with the big ‘Well support.

The Motherwell choir was now in full song as the game developed.  It sparked into a free flowing affair and opportunities started to come at both ends.

The equaliser was to some extent gifted when Tom Sparrow misjudged a high ball that gave possession to Jordan Obita.  He was able to swing the ball in to Bowie and the youngster fired high into the net.

What followed was a frantic twenty minutes as both sides fought for a winner.   Said came close with a near post header but with players tiring time ran out.

Motherwell maintain their one place lead in the table and now have a cup tie against Rpss County to contemplate.  The fine season continues.
