Motherwell swept aside by St Mirren

A disappointing day at Hampden finished with a 4-1 defeat for Motherwell as St Mirren move on to the League Cup final.

Motherwell had to chase the game after St Mirren took the lead midway through the first half.  They had some moments but fell further behind before the break when the ball fell unkindly inside the box.  Good play in the second period was rewarded with ten minutes remaining but it was a false hope.

Jens Berthel Askou made five changes from the midweek winners against Dundee United and the game started well.  Motherwell forced four corners inside the first ten minutes but George was untroubled.

The opener followed a soft free kick in the centre of the pitch.  St Mirren took it quickly, the ball was still in motion but play was allowed to continue and a corner kick resulted.  The low delivery to the near post found its way to Mikael Mandron for a close range finish.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos responded with a low drive that George pushed away for a corner.  Motherwell pushed forward with lots of passes but were unable to create any telling opportunities.  The sucker punch came when Dan Nlundulu was the recipient of a deflection in the area.  He turned and slammed the ball beyond Callum Ward.

Motherwell piled pressure on the St Mirren defence but, again, lacked the telling creativity.  Eventually Tom Sparrow was able to supply Callum Hendry for what looked like a lifeline goal.  The Motherwell crowd were on their feet, cheered by the prospect of a late equaliser, but their hopes were dashed two minutes later when Madron grabbed his second taking a rebound from the bar.

A fourth was to follow to give a flattering scoreline to the Paisley side.  Nevertheless they dished out a lesson that the game is all about goals.  They scored four to ‘Well’s one.
