Motherwell beat Partick Thistle with a first half double

Goals from Moult and McDonald gave Motherwell a comfortable 2-0 win over Partick Thistle at a chilly Fir Park.  The reward is a leap up the table to sixth place.

Thistle never threatened to end their ten year winless run in Motherwell  as the home side dominated proceedings.  The two goal lead at the break was the least the home side deserved.   The manager can take credit for his approach to the game.

Hammell and Ainsworth made way for McMillan and Ferguson as we lined up with a three at the back formation.  Ferguson will be pleased with his partnership with McManus and Heneghan and Samson will be delighted as he records a clean sheet.

Our five man midfield with McMillan and Tait joining Lasley, Clay and Cadden commanded for much of the match and Moult and McDonald took a chance apiece to win the contest.

McDonald had the early chances with a 20 yard free kick and a deflected attempt that earned a corner but he played his part in setting up the opener.  Stuckmann failed to clear his cross and it fell to Moult for an easy finish.

The Thistle goal was under threat several times before the combination of Moult and McDonald delivered the second.  This time the roles were reversed.  Moult was free on the right as his partner burst into the box.  The cross was delivered and the ball was swept into the net.  And the game was won.

Thistle approached the second half with a more positive attitude but we held firm.  Indeed, had Cadden’s 25 yard rocket been lower by six inches or had McDonald chosen to shoot when he latched on to a Moult through ball, the winning margin would have been larger.

Given that our next two fixtures involve Hearts and Celtic, the win was vital.  Well done lads.
