THE 'WELL TOP STORY:
With no Motherwell game to entertain on a Saturday I took in the CIS 1st round tie between Rovers and Airdrie. The Diamonds scored the only goal in a disappointing encounter and we need have no fear about meeting them should they succeed in round 2!
OTHER CLUB HEADLINES:
The score draw earned in Norway will guarantee a special night at Fir Park on Thursday. The team deserves a big support to see them through the second leg and with any luck a glamour tie in the next round.
A late, late penalty robbed the Mighty 'Well of a win in Norway but the team will be delighted to return to Fir Park with the advantage in this Europa league tie.
Aalesund in Norway will provide the next stage for our 2010 European tour. Success in the 3rd preliminary round of the Europa League could lead to a glamour tie against one of the big guns!
Aalesunds FK are not a household name but we certainly cannot afford to treat them with anything but the fullest of respect going into this tie. They are a side on the up and will be reasonably confident when facing us.
A tired but satisfied Motherwell squad arrived home in the wee small hours of Friday morning happy that they had overcome the challenge from Breidablik
A competent performance in Kópavogur, together with a first half goal from Jamie Murphy, ensured that the Mighty 'Well reach the 3rd Qualifying Round. A tie with Aalesunds from Norway is the prize.
It seems that Cardiff City have not handed over the agreed fee in respect of last year's transfer of Paul Quinn to the Bluebirds. Motherwell have now gone public to increase the pressure of the Welsh club.
Motherwell face Breišablik in the second leg of the Europa League preliminaries on Thursday. Craig Brown expects to add to the one goal lead gained at Fir Park but before the flight to Iceland he stressed that there would be no room for complacency.
Football strategists have debated long and hard about the best tactics to be employed in two-legged football ties. Craig Brown has decided what to do with a one goal advantage facing an away game - attack.
