Sexism in the Premier League:

Well, ages ago we played St. Johnstone at Fir Park, Perth's pride and
joy, Real gems? Diamond geezers? I'm not so sure in fact I would
suggest that their fans don't return at all!!

It's a short walk from where I park my car to the ground, and I've
never experienced such sexism as I did on the way to the ground when
we played St. Johnstone at the start of the season. I was a bit
annoyed, and the thought of committing murder was not far from my
mind. On reflection (when I had calmed down a bit) I thought I would
take a look at sexism in football, and the role of female supporters.

Sexism could be seen to be merely directed at women spectators by the
male spectators, but to be fair, lets look at why womens attendance at
football is on the increase (and it surely is, statistics prove it.)
Why are women increasingly going to cold, wet grounds? Is it for any
form of sex appeal?

Show me a handsome footballer - Georgie Best? Ally Super McCoist
Coisty? Mo Johnston? Marco Negri? (OK he is a bit handsome). My friend
reliably informs me that both Larssen and Quitongo are quite dishy.
Quite frankly I cant see it myself! What about our own squad? Show me
o good looking Well player.............Well, I suppose Tommy Coyne and
Dougie were OK in their time but it's the appeal of the play, not the
player that's hooked me. This weak (minded) member of the human race
prefers the game to the idea of star sex appeal. So, for me,
football's appeal isn't the sexy guys.

And now this is really going to hurt, cos this includes you!! There
arent too many handsome Well fans (surely some mistake - Huffy ED)
around at Fir Park these days (were there ever??). So the appeal for
me is not the guys (and yes I do like men !!)

So if I can go to a game professing love of my team and distrust of
the opposing squad, surely others can maintain the easy going sexist
free approach. In other words, don't throw away your rudimentary
mating calls on me guys, its just not worth your effort.
Maybe Well fans can bring about an end to the verbal abuse of women at
games?? Set an example - female Well fans will justify for themselves
their rationale for the appeal of the game.

A parting message to the young men of Perth who hurled the particulary
obscene language at me - go back to Perth and sit on a lump of coal,
THANK YOU.
