A Three Team Division?:

After reading recent reports in the paper about how well Motherwell seem to do against the Old Firm but yet cannot seem to beat the smaller clubs convincingly i.e. Inverness Caley Thistle and Dumbarton , I decided to carry out my own investigation into why the players are up for the Rangers and Celtic games but just couldn't manage to beat weaker sides . The results are disturbing so any squeamish should look away now !

The first man to come under suspicion was Motherwell boss , Alex McLeish who , in his days with the Dons , had it drilled into him by Alex Ferguson that although the green and white hooped jerseys of Celtic and the blue of Rangers should be respected they should not be feared.

Nowadays , Big Eck is passing that knowledge onto his current Fir Park lads but ,unfortunately, forgetting to tell them that teams wearing other jerseys such as white and blue i.e. Kilmarnock and St.Johnstone although , they should be respected , you don't need to give them four goal head starts.

Despite these findings I think it is only fair that Big Eck is held partly
responsible. The Motherwell players are the others who come under suspicion and have to be held partly responsible themselves . Players like Willie Falconer and Shaun McSkimming seem to play absolute blinders against the Old Firm but when it comes to trying to beat Dumbarton they suddenly become inept of all skill which was evident in those particular matches.

Another reason for it is possibly that it is the only time they will get on the telly so a good performance might mean a lucrative transfer deal to a top team ( Willie Falconer? a lucrative transfer deal? you must be bloody joking) But, despite all this there is something I unearthed
for solving this problem that is so hideous and disgusting I cannot bring myself to say it, yet alone put it in writing but I'll have a go at it, OK here goes fffff.. fffffaaaa...
ffffaaannn... bear with me, ffffaaaaannnssss, their I said it, fans Motherwell need more support.

Look at the evidence, Motherwell go to Ibrox for the second last game of the season against a Rangers side ready to sweep us aside and claim the championship crown . No one has given us a
hope in hell and nearly 50,000 Rangers fans are wondering what the final score will be, 4-0, 5-0,7-1. However, little do they know that the Motherwell players in the away dressing room, deep in the bowels of Ibrox stadium are living every minute of the game and are feeding off the massive support that have turned out , all be it most are Rangers fans. The result, a famous 2-0 win for Motherwell and Rangers go off the Ibrox turf with their tails between their legs.

However, Motherwell can also do this at home if you look at the results this season with over 10,000 people coming into the ground. A narrow 3-2 defeat by Celtic followed by a creditable 1-1 draw and a 1-1 draw against Rangers when we played them off the park, yet again and should really have won the game by a couple of goals.

So you see successful teams have the backing of a massive support which can often be like an extra man at times. The Motherwell board have to do more to try and attract new people into Fir Park to watch the team and current supporters have to stop criticising the team when the
ball is passed back or across the middle of the park and when the team go a goal down us supporters have to do our best to try and lift players spirits. If we could only get an gate of 8,000 to 9,000 at every game then I think that, along with more money coming in, the team would be in mid table security. I admit that it will not work every time because sometimes players just won't perform and you will lose a game but more often than not a good home support can be the basis on which a team builds a good challenge in the league.
