Games From The Memory Bank

Following your plea for more of the most memorable Motherwell games, here is my contribution.

Home Matches
MOTHERWELL V RANGERS - Charlie Aitken's testimonial match. Probably my first big game, huge crowd, guest players (Dave Mackay) and a special programme under the floodlights. Oh and it was 1-1.

MOTHERWELL V DUNDEE UTD - Summer Cup Final. Actually winning a cup and playing in a claret strip with amber band in the away leg. Superb.

MOTHERWELL V SPURS - Texaco Cup. Spurs players signing autographs - Mickey Mouse etc as they thought we were that type of team. Glad we stuffed them. I suppose they got their own back by selling us John Hendry.

MOTHERWELL V FULHAM - Anglo Scottish Cup. Bobby Moore in the opposition line up. My Grans funeral, still made it to the game though. Oh we lost. Grief stricken day all round.

MOTHERWELL V CELTIC - Scottish Cup 1984. The day after my first son was born. Agh, 0-6, should have stayed in the Fir Park Club wetting the babies head.

MOTHERWELL V HEARTS - Scottish Cup replay 1987. The day after my second son was born. Agh, 0-1. Major decision taken - no more children.

MOTHERWELL V CELTIC - League match. Andy Lynch scored two own goals - I wonder if he was a closet 'Well fan?

Away matches
ABERDEEN V MOTHERWELL - Scottish Cup. A victory at Pittodrie thanks to a Pat Gardner goal. Main memory of this match was leaving a specially opened Fir Park Club at 7.30am. Getting back at midnight having had to travel all the way back with no windows in the bus.

HIBS V MOTHERWELL - Late 70's. Losing as usual. Making a citizens arrest to save 1 Well fan who was being chased by a gang of Hibee scum. Unfortuneately the citizens arrest did not work out too well - when we were marching the culprit down Easter Road towards some of Lothians finest he inadvertedly ran into a passing lampost. Shame, hope it hurt.

RANGERS V MOTHERWELL - 9 in a row party cancelled. Took a day off work to go to this match. One of the tiny 'Well contingent totally surrounded by the partygoers. Heh, Heh, Heh.

RAITH ROVERS V MOTHERWELL - Bruce Clelland scored a goal.

ST. MIRREN V MOTHERWELL - Kid Kirk sent off once and Billy Abercrombie replied with 5 red cards - superb entertainment. At that time you also had a pre match drink in Stringfellows. No lap dancers though

FORFAR V MOTHERWELL - The car driver managed to lock two sets of car keys inside the vehicle. However a very kind local constable managed to open the doors for us. So, if you ever get stuck in Forfar just pick any car and wait for the cops to get you on your way.
