Legend of Our Time - Chris McCart

LEGEND OF OUR TIME

I thought that it would be fitting that we should feature Chris McCart as he returns to our club after four years in the football wilderness, which saw him play for Falkirk and then Coaching for Celtic. Chris will forever be steeped in Motherwell folklore and history as a member of the 1991 Cup winning side and his pivotal role in that achievement.

Chris played for us between 1984 and 1997, and I can remember his early games alongside experienced pros such as Tom McAdam and Craig Paterson where they helped him through some tough times. The early games he played in were all relegation struggles as Tommy McLean worked to build a side to challenge for trophies.

It all paid off for Chris as he played in one of the most successful Motherwell teams of all time, not only playing in that Cup winning side but also the side that finished in second in the League, alongside Brian Martin and John Philliben. This meant that Chris was part of the Motherwell squads that played in Europe with the highlight being the performance in the Westfalon Stadion in Dortmund against guys like Riedle and Chapuisat.

During the Cup run Chris played in every round of the Competition as we saw of Aberdeen, Falkirk, Morton and Celtic before the final against Dundee Utd. My biggest memory of his role in this was actually in the third round when we were under early pressure from Aberdeen, and he got his body in the way of a couple of shots to keep the score line blank. The video shows him holding his chest after one of these and a great big grimace across his face, but in the end the pain was well worth it!

If Chris can pass on his silky defensive skills to our youngsters in the years ahead we will undoubtedly have a bright future - Welcome back Chris!!
