A Cup Run Awaits

Last updated : 08 February 2004 By Firparkcorner

The brilliant early season form has almost secured our SPL standing for another year and our current twenty four point tally is only four behind last year’s total. The icing on the cake would be another visit (or two) to Hampden late in the spring.

For a club which started out in August with survival as the only objective it is turning into a remarkably successful campaign.

To round it off we have had a series of fortunate draws in the Cup and we have (so far) avoided the banana skins en route to the quarter finals. Season ticket holders have had the bonus of entry to the fourth round tie (the first free cup game since February 2001) although the season ticket book will not provide admission to the quarter final.

The last time regulars had to pay for entry to a cup game at
Fir Park was in February 2000. We had a home replay to Arbroath in the third round and felt we had a chance of progress when Ayr were to visit us for the fourth round. Unfortunately we managed to lose that one by the odd goal in seven.

None of that team remains on the books at Motherwell but the lesson is there for the current first team squad to note. ICT have a cup pedigree and will be no easy pushovers. Mark Brown in particular will be determined to put one over on his old club and the ‘Well team will have to avoid any defensive performance similar to the second half against Queen of the South
.

Confirmation of the date and prices for the quarter final is awaited.
