A new surface has arrived at Fir Park

I made the annual season ticket renewal trip to Fir Park this morning and took advantage of Flow's kind offer to view the newly laid turf.

The sun was shining and the grass seemed to be thriving. The holes punched through the compacted sub soil seem to have improved the drainage so much that the pitch needs frequent use of the sprinklers to ensure that the new turf does not dry out.

The first cut

A first hand cut was underway on Wednesday and it will be some time before the heavy machinery is allowed on to the surface. A liberal sewing of grass seed had been applied and the traditional problem areas were given a dose of special fertiliser to encourage strong growth.

Motherwell's ground retains the well known slope and the ground looked at its best in the sunshine. Some minor changes and adaptations need to be made to ensure that we comply with Uefa regulations. Maintenance to the centre stand was underway during the visit.

Maintenance in progress

Let's hope that the return of a decent surface can help the team resume the high tempo passing game which we enjoyed so much in the first half of last season.
