A View From the Other Side

The usual dash from the pub resulted in yet another missed kick off but we still managed to locate a block of four seats which gave us a good view. The slow start to the game meant I could get used to my surroundings without giving myself away! The first highly annoying event was United’s first real attack which resulted in everyone standing up. Now, I prefer to stand at football and stand for the whole game at Fir Park – but is the jack in the box stuff really necessary?! Stand up or sit down, pick a preference, either is fine but not both!

No double shuffle on Saturday but a goal instead
The shot from Paterson which went in obviously presented a problem but to be honest I found stifling a reaction quite easy. I think because it came out of the blue there was no expectation and the ‘will it make it’ wait was ended by the reaction of the ‘Well fans. We then had our best spell of the game and had either McBride or Fitzpatrick found the net with good hits I may have struggled to remain seated.

Half time came and went without much incident and much of the second half was spent chatting away. The game was hardly riveting and the majority of the United fans around me were already resigned to not scoring. Robson’s chance prompted everyone to stand but both Motherwell and myself escaped unharmed again. The game drifted away from United and the fans became more interested in cheering Jim Paterson. Every time he got the ball, he was encouraged with ‘Come on Stepover!’ and there was one brilliant individual who deserves a special mention. Whenever JP got the ball, he would stand up and yell ‘DOUBLE SHUFFLE!’ wait until realizing this wasn’t going to happen then ‘BOOOOOOOO!’ but it was all good natured.

The final whistle produced a chorus of boos from the United fans and there was more than one vocal argument about the merits of sacking Ian McCall. Butcher, Malpas and Stepover were all politely applauded off and we headed to the pub to discuss United’s woes and Motherwell’s efficiency over a lager and some dinner.

Was it an enjoyable experience? Yes, because not only did we win but the United fans were good humored and friendly. Would I fancy doing it if we were on the way to a 2-0 scudding? No ta…
