Big Lee for Scotland

Lee McCulloch came through our system as a gangly and awkward striker. He had some kind of talent, that was just about clear, but how best to utilise it was the problem. He usually played as a front man where his height and presence made him a natural target man.

However, his lumbering style meant it took a long time for him to find his feet in the first team. After around 30 appearances (many from the bench in fairness) Lee finally got his first goals for the club in a 6-2 horsing of Hibs.

McCulloch never became a truly prolific scorer for us but he did act as a useful player. However, when cash laden
Wigan came along offering huge bags of money for him (and Stephen McMillan) the consensus was that it was too good an offer to refuse. And so, after less than 100 games for us, Lee had remarkably secured a big money move.

The move to the English Second Division caused titters amongst the ‘Well support, particularly given Wigan’s ambitious Premiership plans. However, despite being moulded into a midfielder (something which would have seemed impossible at Fir Park!) Lee is still getting his game in a team sitting comfortably in the Championship promotion spot. Not only that, he is finding the net with astonishing regularity, as can be seen with his double figure goal tally.

We may or may not have a sell on clause for Lee – Pat Nevin was very evasive about the intricacies of the deal and told separate people different things about it – but even so, ‘Well fans should be pleased that McCulloch is doing a good job. He’s not the sharpest tool in the box but he’s a nice bloke and has always worked hard. We should be proud of all our kids who go onto represent Scotland and Lee is no different.

Just for information, Lee was 33/1 to open the scoring !
