Calm before the storm

After the high of last season and the early boost of Mark McGhee agreeing to stay as manager, the build up to 2008/09 has been strangely muted.

The boss gave us a boost
Given we have several top players and European football to look forward to, that is a bit surprising.

But football is all about the here and now - and there is little doubt we haven't been having a great time of it.

Another loss on the practice pitch at the weekend is scarcely significant but Brian McLean being ruled out for so long is a blow to our already thin squad.

And our failure to add to that squad is also causing eyebrows to be raised.

John Kennedy and Jim O'Brien may well prove to be sound players but we haven't even captured them properly yet.

However, while Mark McGhee made mistakes last year he also guided us to one of our best league finishes since the War and that should be enough to earn our trust.

One of McGhee's great strengths is not signing players for the sake of it - it is disappointing we have released two of the trialists from the Austria trip but better than signing players who aren't to the required standard.

We still have nearly three weeks until the season starts and a lot longer until the transfer window shuts.

It's time to keep the faith!
