After nineteen games we were second bottom and only five points clear of Dunfermline. We now find ourselves as close to Rangers in second spot as we are above the Pars in last, eleven points from each.

The new guys help with the half time draw

The second cycle of games is now complete and we have played every team home and away. It is an appropriate time to take stock. The frustration we all felt during the early season struggles is easily forgotten after a few good results but maybe we need to learn the hardest lesson for fans – be patient.

Despite knowing that we had suffered badly from a long list of injuries, the temptation to call for the head of the new manager proved too much for many. The lack of signings over the summer window was interpreted as weak and inefficient rather than measured and selective.

We now face the New Year in a relatively healthy state with the prospect of three new faces available to freshen up the squad. Malpas is now on record as saying that the board have assured him that McDonald is here at least until the summer (unless someone offers a million pounds). Suddenly it is a good time to be a ‘Well fan.

As for the display at Fir Park on Saturday? It was a joy to see us play a passing game from back to front. The number of chances we created was a fitting reward for the players. We can only hope that they will avoid the long punt if a more constructive option is available.

More of the same on Tuesday could see us send our first foot visitors back to Govan with their tails between their legs.

Happy New Year!
