CIS Cup Preview - St Mirren (a)

St Mirren have made an impressive start to the season. They are one point behind Ross County at the top of the First Division but those teams have opened a gap between themselves and the chasing pack. They have also shown they can play cup football – a semi final against Morton awaits them in the Challenge Cup.

Hopefully Terry will have had some scouts watching them recently as we have encountered only a few of their players on recent SPL business. Ex-‘Well kid Mark Reilly and Kevin McGowne are in their squad whilst Andy Millen is still registered to play! They also have ex-Dunfermline player Billy Mehmet on the books.

The Buddies will be very confident due to their winning run of seven successive games but we should be capable of progressing. Jim Hamilton will almost certainly be out and Phil O’Donnell is touch and go – although if there’s any doubt over him presumably Terry will keep him wrapped up. This means it is likely that Fagan will continue in the middle of the park with Clarkson coming in to partner Skippy up front.

Many people dismiss the League Cup as a waste of time – and it is easy to see why at times – but it provides some fun away days and a good run can make a huge difference to the season. The momentum gained from this competition can carry over to the league and nothing beats the buzz of knowing your team has a semi or final in the offing.

We have slipped up twice against lower opposition in Terry’s reign and he will be anxious to avoid another embarrassment on Tuesday. Once again we go into the game knowing that the right approach and a good performance will see us progress with room to spare. St Mirren will make it tough but we should have enough in the tank to win by 3-1.
