George Adams leaves for Rangers

George joined the club’s management team along with Eric Black, Terry Butcher and Chris McCart after the departure of Billy Davies (although he had been offered the job before Eric Black was appointed) and his reputation helped to entice several noteable youngsters to the club. He restructured the youth system and was in charge of all under 18s at the club as well as fulfilling a scouting role for the first team.

When John Boyle decided to take Motherwell into interim administration his job changed and he became, in effect, the Director of Football, taking care of most of the management functions relating to the team and allowing Terry Butcher to focus entirely on the first team. It is believed that his 'steady hand' has been a major influence in steering the club though the recent difficult times.

George is a quiet, unassuming man who prefers to watch ‘Well matches from the fans perspective. He is a regular ‘away fan’ and is known to most of the diehards who make the treks to Aberdeen, Dundee and the like to support the team.

Life at Fir Park had its uncomfortable moments, particularly when his son, Derek, was the focus of barracking from sections of the crowd. But he answered the critics who suggested that Del's appearances were due to a touch of nepotism (see the link below).

There is a quote in Thursday’s Evening Times from a Fir Park insider saying, “George is basically the main man at Motherwell, and deals with everything from negotiating contracts to helping Terry Butcher with first-team affairs.

He's very highly thought of in the football world and it comes as no surprise that one of the top clubs would want to have him.

There was contact between the clubs last week and Motherwell couldn't and wouldn't stand in his way. Celtic and Motherwell's loss will certainly prove Rangers' gain."

George was interviewed in depth by FirParkCorner last year – read the interview here.
