Killie Again

January 2003 and Motherwell are at the bottom of the SPL. We are playing some decent footie occasionally though and we have a couple of youngsters who are amongst the best in the league. We were optimistic but little did we know a cup run was in the offing!

1-0 to the Motherwell!
The Kilmarnock tie which started our run was witnessed by the usual 2000 or so ‘Well fans who appear for third round day. The large and vocal backing witnessed an edgy start from both teams but we took the lead mid-way through the first half. David Clarkson turned his man and sprinted into the box only to be hauled down when about to shoot. Faddy sent Marshall the wrong way from the spot and we were one up.

The game was a bit of an anticlimax in all honesty and the sending off of a Killie player early in the second half ensured we would have the minimal of fuss in progressing. We didn’t need to over exert ourselves although we were almost punished late on when DuBourdeau was called on to make a good save.

We would definitely settle for another 1-0 penalty win on Saturday and we would also be happy with a similar run emerging. In 2003 we won at Clyde in the fourth round before getting the perfect quarter final draw, Stranraer away. After dispatching them, we eventually lost out to Rangers in a pulsating Hampden semi.

So, the magic of the cup is here and we also get the benefit of a Killie pie. Roll on Saturday!
