It is a time when the mind is allowed to stray.  Could this be the year?  But all that changes after the first whistle blows.

Hands together

The goals came either side of the break and both were beauties.  Ainsworth has had mixed reviews from claret and amber devotees but all will recognise the pace he employed to break free and the skill in the chip that beat the 'keeper.  Time seemed to slow down as the lob floated over MacDonald.  Would it drop under or over the bar?  Happily it was hit with perfect weight and gave us a well earned lead at half-time.

Johnson's header was described by McGhee as a striker's goal - one that Kris Boyd would have been proud to claim.  The manager was circumspect when asked if the winger's perceived value had just increased though his smile suggested otherwise.  Cadden delivered an accurate cross to set up his team-mate and it remains a delight to see one of our home grown lads develop into a mainstay of the team.

The clash of heads involving McHugh and Killie's Hawkshaw ended the game for both players and although our man was booked his real punishment is the deep gash in his forehead.  His introduction to the Premiership will bear the badge of the doctor's handiwork.

Almost a thousand Motherwell fans were at Rugby Park on Saturday hoping for the win that would offer the perfect start to the new campaign.  Despite a late scare they were able to leave with dreams intact and the knowledge that three points had been earned.  The dream is still alive!
