Kilmarnock - 24h on

The spirit that has enabled us to make a habit of taking points from losing positions is a reflection of a team that has plenty of self belief and we saw that in spades on Saturday.  Of course, it’s true that we should not have fallen two behind but the reaction of the team thereafter has to be admired.

It was a delight to see Ojamaa’s trademark celebration following one of his classic goals - a reminder of the treats he gave us in his first few weeks.  What a year he’s had! When (and if) Murphy does move on it looks like we’ll have to rely more on the Estonian to keep our season on track.  McHugh will also have to take on more of the burden and we can be sure that he won’t shrink from the task.  Even if the manager is able to add to the squad there should be places available for those currently on the fringe.

We leave the year as we entered it, in third place in the SPL table.  That’s a remarkable achievement for a club with our resources.  @SPLstats has pointed out that Motherwell has accumulated the second highest points total in the calendar year 2012.  We have a small squad and the manager’s ability to dabble in the transfer market is very limited.  Whether we play above our weight or not is hardly the issue.  We have every reason to hope that another European tour might be our prize this season.  It’s a good time to be a ‘Well fan.

The special day was marked by applause at the tenth minute in several grounds across the country.  It was a pleasing reminder that football supporters, even when the battle is engaged, can recognise that the games are merely entertainment. A little perspective does no one any harm.

Wednesday’s game at Parkhead is the last before St Johnstone come to Fir Park on 20 January.  By that time we may have seen some departures and the arrival of some replacements but if we’re able to keep the spirit that has served so well recently than we can look to the New Year with confidence.

Have your say on the messageboard.
