Luck of the Irish Not With Stephen

After keeping Owen and Rooney quiet when Northern Ireland defeated England, Craigan would have been confident he could hold his own against a talented Portugal side. He was partnering Colin Murdock in the centre of defence but he gave the visitors the opening goal when he deflected Ronaldo’s cross past Maik Taylor and into his own net.  He can take some pride from tonight though - this was his 18th Irish cap but significantly his 15th whilst at Fir Park, making him our most capped player.  With some good years still ahead of him, Stephen could well set a record which lasts for some time.

Capless!
The Irish did well to keep close to their more illustrious guests and scored an equaliser early in the second half. The game finished all square and no doubt they will be delighted with the final result.

But the other Motherwell player in action tonight was to be left disappointed. Brian McLean did get a place on the bench but Lawrie Sanchez did not make many substitutions and young Brian will have to wait a wee bit longer for his first cap.

Let’s hope they are both in the mood to pick up three points on Saturday!
