Motherwell run up seven in Gretna

Motherwell romped to a 7-0 win over Gretna at Raydale Stadium on Tuesday evening.  Danny Johnson had on his scoring boots and racked up a hat-trick.

With the fitness gained from last week’s training camp in Northern Ireland, Motherwell had a huge advantage over the Lowland League side and that was pressed home in the second half.

The interval had almost arrived before the scoring started. Jermaine Hylton and Danny Johnson delivered the goals that offered a comfortable lead before the nine second half substitutes made their appearance.

Richard Tait was one of them and he soon got on the scoresheet following a one-two with Allan Campbell.  Johnson added his second with help from the opposition ‘keeper then Barry Maguire pounced when Hylton’s shot came off the bar.  A trialist scored with an impressive scissor kick before Johnson completed his triple.

A breathless Johnson was interviewed by MFC after the whistle. “It’s always good to get a run out and to get a ht-trick. I had a frustrating season last year and I want to get back amongst the goals and into the team.

“Fair play to Gretna who gave us a bit of a game at the start but our fitness came through at the end”

Regardless of the level of the opposition scoring a barrel load of goals can only boost confidence.

Next up is a trip to Darlington on Saturday (2pm kick off).
