Motherwell start cup campaign in Aberdeen

It is perhaps understandable that the European games did not go to plan against superior opposition but the domestic League Cup tie at Ibrox produced one of our most horrific showings of the year/decade/millennium/whole of time.  That Rangers were subsequently humbled in the next round, 3-0 at home to Inverness, puts that 2-0 defeat into perspective – and regardless of excuses or reasons, five cup games, five defeats, no goals scored and 12 conceded is absolutely dismal.  A massive improvement will be needed at Pittodrie.

Aberdeen are a much improved side from last season, when they knocked us out in a Fir Park quarter final, but they too have been inconsistent and were beaten at home by Inverness in mid-week. That will be frustrating for them but the fact that they could have gone top of the SPL with a win shows just how strong they have been this term.

Our away form has been better than at home which suggests the journey north should not be something to be feared.  It is a game we can win at our best but anything less is likely to end in another cup disappointment.

It remains to be seen if Randolph will be available as we appeal his potential ban for kicking out against Hearts Randolph's ban is now confirmed so Hollis will get a rare chance to step up.  Hammell will surely be recalled if fit but other than that, Stuart McCall will surely be going for the same again.

The last time we played at Pittodrie in the cup we recorded a famous victory en route to glory in 1991.  We can only hope for a repeat but may have to settle for a second attempt after a 1-1 draw.

Remember 1991?
