New Season Fixtures

“I can't wait for my first game”
The first game will attract huge interest (Setanta 2pm) and could well be a sell out. It has been too long since we turned over this half of the Old Firm and there could be no better stage to reverse the trend than a sunny day at Fir Park. We last played Rangers in an opening game in 1994 when Tommy Coyne scored in a 2-1 defeat at Ibrox. The last time in Motherwell was in 1982 when Carson and Clelland found the net in a 2-2 draw. Following last season's 4-4 opener with the other half of the gruesome twosome we could be in for a rare treat.

Motherwell have not started any league campaign with a win this century so Malpas has a wonderful opportunity to get his managerial career off to the perfect start if he can produce the goods against the Frenchman's mercenaries..

We finish the cycle with Celtic away. This will mean mid season consecutive games with both of the Old Firm for the second year running. An away double in October then both Rangers and Celtic will be at Fir Park at the New Year. Celtic on December 30 then a Ne'erday game with Rangers! Another date of note is a Boxing day visit to Dunfermline.

The last game before the split is at Parkhead but we have Kilmarnock and Dunfermline at home before that. We have 17 games at Fir Park and 16 away meaning that we should have two home fixtures to anticipate after the split (with any luck in the top six).

The SFA has also released its fixture schedule. The third round of the Scottish Cup takes place on January 6 and there are half a dozen Uefa championship games taking up Saturday/Wednesday slots in September, October and March. There are no SPL games planned to clash with these international dates.

Our first friendly fixture at Stenhousemuir is now less than three weeks away and with the World Cup filling the close season void until July 9, the opener will be with us before we know it. Bring it on.

The SPL, SFL and English leagues charge a high fee to permit the publication of their fixture lists. The full listing of ‘Well fixtures will be on the Official site.
