A trip to Stenhousemuir is next on Motherwell’s journey through Group G. Nothing but a win will do.
Motherwell have not played a competitive game against The Warriors in over forty years but there have been a few pre-season friendly fixtures in the interim.
This will be the second match in the group for Stenhousemuir, they lost the first 3-0 away to Morton. A couple of late injuries in that game may cause a problem for manager Gary Naysmith. His small squad offers little room for alterations.
A well known pair kick off against Stenhousemuir in July 2002
A fourth place in League One last season earned them a place in the play-offs but they remain in the same division for the new campaign.
Jens Berthel Askou has ensured that most of his players have had some game time in his first two competitive games. No doubt that plan will extend to his team selection for Saturday’s tie.
His preferred style has raised a few eyebrows with the Fir Park faithful. The sight of your ‘keeper playing as an auxiliary sweeper takes some adjustment. A few of the new signings have impressed and the pair (Emmanuel Longelo and Lukas Fadinger) who found the net against Peterhead look like good acquisitions.
No matter who is selected there is no doubt that three points will be needed if Motherwell are to maintain a realistic hope of topping the group. To that end a 3-0 away win will send the travelling fans home happy.
