Next up - Motherwell up for the cup at Pittodrie

Motherwell travel to play Aberdeen on Saturday with a trip to Hampden the prize.

The quarter-final of the Premier Sports Cup comes after five rounds of the Premiership for the Steelmen.  ‘Well fans have been delighted at the team’s transformation under their new manager but there is acknowledgement that some slack defending and a lack of attacking flair are causes for concern.

Motherwell held the lead in each of the last three games but failed to hold and had to settle for draws.  They have not lost any of ten competitive matches this season. It will be a confident side that travels to Pittodrie at the weekend.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos had a painful encounter with a Dens Park goal post last Saturday and we await news of any injury.  Callum Slattery seems to have joined the ranks of the walking wounded.  Otherwise we can expect a familiar midfield and maybe a return of Stephen O’Donnell in defence at the expense of Johny Koutroumbis.

Aberdeen have had a horrible start to their league campaign with only a solitary point and zero goals after four attempts.  A 3-0 defeat to FCSB ended their Europa League journey.  It’s no surprise that the fans are less than impressed with Jimmy Thelin’s stewardship.

There is little point in analysing the Dons’ goal scorers as they have yet to make their mark.  Their hopes have rested with Kusini Yengi, Kevin Nisbet and Dante Polvara but with no success.  Let’s hope the drought continues on Saturday.

John Beaton will be in charge and VAR will be available if needed.  With any luck the game will be wrapped up after 90 minutes with a 1-0 win for the Mighty ‘Well.
