Pre-season blow

Motherwell went down 2-1 to Romanian champions CFR Cluj in the first real pre-season friendly of the year.

Clarkson found the net once more
Mark McGhee revealed he felt the side were rusty, especially in the first half which was dominated by the opponents.

Despite being outplayed Motherwell only trailed by one at the break - thanks to a penalty conceded by McGarry - and hit back through Clarkson early in the second half.

Motherwell finished strongly and missed chances to win the game before a last gasp freekick gave the Romanians victory.

However, rather than the result the main concern was the injury endured by Brian McLean after a reckless over the ball challenge.

Early checks revealed medial ligament damage and it looks certain he will now miss the start of the season.

The big defender looked to be on his way out of the club shortly after McGhee's arrival last summer but deputised for Paul Quinn in the home straight of the chase for Europe.

There is no shame in losing to the champions of Romania as they are side backed by a millionaire with several top players. But it is important we find match sharpness quickly with the season just over three weeks away and getting players seriously injured is a big blow to a squad already lacking depth.
