Queens Park 1-2 'Well

Last updated : 10 July 2005 By Frazzle

Despite Hammell, Kinniburgh, McBride, Fitzpatrick and Corrigan
all being unavailable
for selection, Terry opted to start with a strong
team for the sun-drenched encounter.

It didn't take long for the SPL stars to get going as Stevie Craigan
rattled the face of the
crossbar with a header inside the first two
minutes. This was quickly followed by a bad
miss by Jim Hamilton,
as he dragged his shot past the 'keeper’s right hand post from the

corner of the six-yard box.

Skippy was on the scoresheet again
He made amends after eleven minutes when Skippy was
tumbled at the edge of the box.

The referee pointed to the spot to
award hat can only be described as
a soft penalty and Foran
stepped
up to send the goalie the wrong way
to open the scoring.

The reply from the 'home' side was
instant as a poor headed clearance
from Partridge
landed perfectly for
a Queens’ striker to wonderfully
volley home from the corner of the
18-yard box.

Ten minutes later, Skippy sent a
header over the bar when gifted a
free header from the
penalty spot,
but he was soon on the scoresheet.
He controlled a chipped pass from

Craigan to turn and smash home what turned out to be the winning goal
into the bottom
corner of the net.

Jim Hamilton saw a header well saved by the goalie just before
half time and that was to
be the last action before Butcher
introduced wholesale changes at the interval.

Graeme Smith was introduced to the 'Well fans for the second
half and his first
contribution wasto send the ball sailing into
the car park with a sclaffed clearance. Other
than that, he was
largely untroubled and put in a fully competent shift.

Ten minutes into the second half, Brian Kerr forced a strong
save from the goalkeeper
after an excellent move involving
Clarkson, Fagan and Smith.

Clarkson was at the centre of everything in the second half
and sent Kenny Wright clear
moments later to force yet
another save out of the busy home keeper. His excellent

performance was almost marked with a goal midway through
the second half as a series
of twists and turns on the edge
of the box led to a curling shot grazing the post. Clarkson

was again in the thick of the action as he appeared to be
chopped down in the box only
for the appeals to be waved
away by the man in the middle.

The young team clearly had a point to prove and continued to
press, leading to Fagan
volleying over on the eighty minute
mark when it seemed easier to score.

All in all, Terry will be happy with the overall professionalism
of the performance and
will face some tough choices for next
season if Clarkson and the rest of the kids continue
to impress.
Next up, Southampton at Fir Park on Tuesday.
