Remember When We Won at Rugby Park?

Kilmarnock 0-1 Motherwell – Scottish Cup 2002/3

Away wins in the cup are always immensely enjoyable and this one was no different, not least because it provided a brief respite from an utterly miserable league season. There was a massive Motherwell support in attendance to watch Faddy slot home a penalty for the only goal of the game before Chris Innes’ sending off rendered the match over before the hour mark. Not the most exciting contest but a thoroughly pleasant away day all the same.

Faddy scores...

Kilmarnock 0-3 Motherwell – League, August 2002

This was a vital win early in the season before our administration hit side collapsed into a mammoth losing run. We were given an advantage when Gary Locke was sent off in the second half and we began to take control. Andy McLaren then responded to the stick being dished out by the ‘Well fans with an exceptionally rude hand gesture which was spotted by the referee we were then faced with nine men. We looked nervy and unsure of how to proceed but screamer from Ramsay and a run and shot from Pearson sealed the game. Killie had another man sent off for a professional foul and Faddy curled home the free kick. Super.

Kilmarnock 1-4 Motherwell – League, April 2002

The actual result did not mean much in terms of the league but what a day this was. John Boyle made the announcement that we were going into administration only a couple of days before the match and many players knew this would be their last game for the club. Despite the uncertainty we performed brilliantly and the vocal support was rewarded with a great win. Adams, Faddy, Elliott and Pearson all found the net and for a short time we were distracted from the pain which the club was still go through.

Kilmarnock 0-2 Motherwell – League, February 2000

This match was fairly unremarkable until someone – Derek Adams? – was dismissed in the second half.  Rather than sitting in for the 0-0, Billy Davies shuffled his pack into an attacking 3-3-3 formation which rattled the home side.  A Stephen McMillan free kick and a half volley from John Spencer gave us a superb and unlikely victory.

Kilmarnock 2-4 Motherwell – League, November 1996

This was another astonishing game – if only for the fact that Andy Roddie had an absolute blinder.  We were one nil up at half time from a Coyne tap in and doubled the lead early in the second half.  We got a highly debatable pass back foul on the edge of the six yard box and Philliben rammed it into the roof of the net.  With the game looking safe we duly sold a goal and let Kilmarnock back into it.  Coyne got his second to put us on easy street once more but again we shipped a stupid goal and in the closing stages we were forced to hang onto a game we had dominated.  No matter, with injury time approaching a Kilmarnock defender slipped whilst receiving a shy and Coyne sent a wonderful chip over the ‘keeper from 35 yards to seal a great win.  Happy day!

So, do you have a particular favourite from that lot or do you have good memories from another success at Rugby Park?  One thing is sure, we would take a repeat of any of them on Saturday!
