Superstitious Beyond Belief?

One ‘Well fan has been lamenting the fact that the chilling weather has meant the ‘lucky’ cup final scarf – a decrepit piece of cloth which would not keep a polar bear warm in a heat wave – has been discarded from her hand bag. In its place is a huge Harry Potter effort which is very warm but how many cups has it seen us win?

The phenomenon of lucky items or superstitions is not new but everyone has them. Some people won’t shave on match days, some will only enter the ground via a particular turnstile or buy a programme from the one seller. Do they make a difference? Of course they don’t. We all know it but with the semi final coming up the superstitions will be strictly adhered to.

For example, my favoured hat will be firmly on my head but I will also have donned a claret and amber USC windcheater. It doesn’t get worn to games often but it happened to be at Cappielow for the start of the run and has seen each successive League Cup victory. Will it make a blind bit of difference? No but it has been a successful bit of clothing so far, unlike my Maple Leafs jacket which is banished to the cupboard on match days!

If you have a lucky charm which has been forgotten or discarded recently, now might be a good time to bring it out again!
