'Well Away for CIS Round Two

The Trophy
Morton looked dead set to win the second division last season until a great run from Airdrie and a Cappielow collapse meant that they missed out on promotion. We last played Morton in the League Cup at Fir Park in 1997 when an Owen Coyle hat-trick saw off the visitors. Our last visit to Greenock came in 1991 – a memorable Scottish Cup quarter final replay which we triumphed 5-4 in a penalty shoot out.

Gretna are relative newcomers to the Scottish League and this could give many ‘Well fans a chance to visit Raydale Park. The capacity is only 2200 so another ticket scramble could be on the cards. Gretna are widely tipped to stroll the Third Division this year as they are the only full time side in that league. Their squad is managed by Rowan Alexander and contains notable names such as David Holdsworth, Jamie McQuilken, Derek Townsley (you know what that means, don’t you?), David Bingham, Andy Smith (nightmare opponent #532), Danny Lennon, Martin Cameron and Stephen Cosgrove (yes, him).

So, neither team will provide a walkover and whilst Morton are in the higher division, Gretna does seem like a really tricky tie as well. The First Round tie should have taken place this mid-week but was postponed and will now take place on Tuesday.

Other interesting ties in the draw include Ross County-Inverness and possibly Killie-Ayr.
