The first signs were the occasional house decorated with claret and amber. Home made signs proclaiming ‘Good luck ‘Well’ with a teddy completer with the team strip.

Then a few groups could be seen walking purposefully to some assembly point but tell-tale flashes of bright amber were visible.

Cars dropped off early customers at the pubs around Fir Park, breakfast was on the menu.. Couples clutching their lucky mascots, fans wearing strips, flag sellers out to make a quick buck began to swell the numbers on the street.

Young kids, firmly grasping their ‘Well banners in one hand and a parental hand in the other, were walked to the train station. Everyone is gathering for the big day out.

Motherwell are playing at Hampden and the whole town already has a smile.

There’s a huge banner atop Skelly’s facing Fir Park , ‘Come on ‘Well’, in letters three feet tall.

We’re going to Hampden!
