Mike's Moan: The Case For The Defence

How many goals are we going to lose this season from back post headers? It is a worrying trend that is going to continue unless we do something about it.

What should we do? Play Brian McLean - our best central defender. He is tall, good in the air, good on the ball and reads the game well. He would add much needed muscle to our back line and would also be a danger in the opposition penalty area.

The only question mark over him is his fitness; can he avoid injury and get a run in the team? In my opinion he deserves a chance and I would play him instead of Mark Reynolds. Mark has done superbly since he came into the team but I still don't believe he is a centre half. He is a left back playing out of position and this is why he has been caught out on numerous occasions this season.

I know Craigan can be infuriating and was at fault for the United goal on Saturday but he has good experience, is a good organiser and for a club the size of ours he is a good centre half. A partnership of Craigan and McLean would stiffen up our rear guard, add strength to the team and surely would be our best way of trying to defend corners.

Reynolds hasn't had a break this year, so a drop down to the bench would do him no harm and would guard against burn out. He could play in the reserves at left back, get used to the position again, and then come back and put real pressure on Paterson.

JP has done well for us this season and does not deserved to be dropped, however, Reynolds has the potential to be the best left back in the country and I think it is about time we realise this and play him in his best position.
