Tam's New Season Tantrum

Last updated : 04 February 2004 By Tom Bell

I’m Back!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I’m back. As sure as Rangers signing bargain basement players and Celtic signing none at all, I’m back to inflict my opinions on anyone who’ll listen. As usual at the start of the new season – the media is full of the wonderful “Old Firm” – the lifelong saviours of Scottish football. It’s enough to make real football supporters who follow their local teams with unstinting devotion throw up. The Scottish media that are supposed to be against bigotry in all of its shapes and forms devote 90% of their time and column inches to the main perpetrators of this venom. We can only hope they start to report what is happening in the football world and not what might happen at Parkhead or Ibrox.

Be Grateful For Small Mercies

Despite being among the large majority who feel the urge to give Stephen Pearson a good slap, we Well fans should be grateful for being able to hold onto our more capable players for hopefully another season. Still having the flair of McFadden is as good as any new signing we could have pulled off.

If the aforementioned Pearson lives up to his promise and turns in a season of consistently high standard performances he may be able to get the support of the fans back – this is something he very obviously did not have against Fulham on Saturday.

I am one of the many who are still not convinced by this boy and his very clear lack of heart for the fight – shown in almost every tackle he goes into. Last season he seemed to pick and choose the games in which he would give his full commitment – any game where the “Old Firm” were involved and the cup semi-final being the most obvious examples. Games against the Dundee Uniteds of this world seemed to be of no interest to him.

Despite this initial whinge let’s try to get behind the team, which has been improved by the re-introduction of Stephen Craigan and Alex Burns to the Fir Park dressing room after their periods away. They should certainly bolster what was a shaky central defence last season and give us another proven goalscorer.

The most positive signing so far this close season I feel has been that of

Barry John Corr from Celtic, as I felt the signing of Gordon Marshall was shortsighted in the extreme as he will soon be forty. The best thing Marshall has to offer is the experience and guidance he can pass onto the youthful Corr who should rightfully be installed as the first choice goalkeeper.

Tantrums Hard To Come By

Despite my now standard moan about the Glasgow media set (who I’m sure will give me plenty to moan about throughout the season) and Stephen Pearson who will now have to work even harder to gain the respect and support of ‘Well fans, I think that Motherwell FC have a brighter future than many would believe – with a youthful team which now has one year more experience than this time last year. I just hope they use this experience to give two fingers to the media who are already writing them off as relegation certainties. Andy McInnes and the wonderful James Traynor you have been warned.

Looking forward to a successful season for the Steelmen,

Tam
