Kerr Injured in Draw against St Mirren

Kerr stretchered off in the first half
The really bad news came early on when Brian Kerr was carried into the Love St pavilion with a damaged left knee. He seemed to catch his studs in the turf and his momentum caused the left knee to buckle. An unhappy Terry Butcher said after the game that the club had suffered “a major blow”.

It may be that one activity is missing from our pre-season training routines. The notion of hitting the target when shooting is clearly alien to so many of our forwards that it seemed by the halftime break that any goal was only going to come our way if the Buddies were to do us the favour of putting Stevie Woods on between the sticks.

Apart from shots off target by O’Donnell, Clarkson (twice) and Hammell (with a dead ball in the perfect spot just outside the box) our only chance in the fist session came from a defensive slip up early on which gave Clarkson a half chance of retrieving a back pass and a good chance on the half hour when McDonald forced a good stretching save from Hinchcliffe.

Terry tells $ky his plans
Gus McPherson duly obliged and Woodsie took position in front of the two hundred ‘Well fans who made the journey along the M8. Our ex-keeper was soon in action when Clarkson took a well struck volley from the edge of the box, only a leap at full stretch to the postage stamp corner prevented the opener.

We scored a good goal moments later. Scott McDonald ran onto a through pass and from the left side of the box he crossed to Shaun Fagan who finished well from the edge of the six yard box.

The lead was short lived and St Mirren equalised inside two minutes when Baird got on the end of a set piece and fired home from around eight yards.

It looked as though we would take the win which our second half showing may have merited when Craigan headed home a Paterson cross inside the last ten minutes but unbelievably we failed, for the second time, to hold on to a lead for more than two minutes. Eddie Annand headed home from close in.

We had a good penatly shout declined just before the referee blew for full time but there can be no excuses for the slack defensive display which failed to secure the win. Terry said “We could be in troubleif we defend like that in the SPL. There are good lessons to be learned and lots to practice in the training ground.”
